The Sapphire Preferred lets you move points to airlines and hotels, where they are worth 4 to 8+ cents each instead of 1. Cash, gift cards, and the Chase travel portal are the weakest uses. Everything below is about the strong uses.

Hyatt rate gets 25% worse

Hyatt is usually the best hotel partner. For Sapphire Preferred, the transfer rate drops from 1-to-1 to 4-to-3 on this date. Before then, decide: book a Hyatt stay now, upgrade the card to a Sapphire Reserve (keeps 1-to-1), or simply accept the lower rate. This is the one decision worth making soon.

The rules that matter

Do

  • +Transfer to partners (Hyatt, Virgin Atlantic, Aeroplan, Flying Blue).
  • +Confirm the seat or room first, then transfer. Transfers cannot be undone.
  • +Keep the card open and paid. Points vanish if the account closes.

Don't

  • ×Cash out or buy gift cards (about 1 cent each).
  • ×Transfer to Marriott or IHG (poor value, even with bonuses).
  • ×Transfer "just in case." Stranded points are the top way value is lost.

Find and confirm award space on the airline or hotel website.
Transfer the exact points needed from Chase (1,000 minimum, usually instant).
Book it right away. Done.
